Kangogo Breaks School Record in 3,000 Meter Run
Feb. 12, 2005
Fayetteville, Arkansas -
Kip Kangogo broke the school record in the 3,000 meter run, highlighting TCU's efforts at the Tyson Foods-Razorback Invitational, held Saturday at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track Center on the University of Arkansas campus.
Kangogo, a junior from Kabarnet, Kenya, covered the 3,000 meter distance in 7:59.99 to finish second in the championship division, missing the gold medal by just over a half second. Benson Chesang from Kansas won the race in 7:59.46. Kangogo's mark was better than the school record of 8:04.17, set by former TCU all-American Eliud Njubi in 2002.
"Kip had a great performance," said head coach Darryl Anderson. "I was very pleased with his effort. He had a little bit of a foot problem going into the race and he didn't decide to run until just before the race. He knew what he was doing and just missed getting the win. To run under eight minutes is a great race."
Junior all-American Jackson Langat placed eighth in the championship division of the 800 meter run. Langat turned in a time of 1:51.91, nearly six seconds off his school record mark of 1:46.09 he set at this meet a year ago.
Senior Cleavon Dillon returned to the track for the first time in 2005 and showed a glimpse of the form that earned him all-America honors in the long jump as a freshman in 2002. Dillon finished fifth in the championship division of the long jump with a leap of 7.40 meters (24-03.50). That mark easily surpassed his best effort from last season, a jump of 7.31 meters (23-11.75) set in early February.
On the women's side, Calandra Stewart may have had the best performance, finishing sixth in the championship division of the mile run with a time of 4:58.82.
"Overall, I was pleased with the way we competed," continued Anderson. "This is a high-caliber meet and whatever weaknesses you have, they will be exposed at a meet like this. We still have a lot of catching up to do in terms of our training. We just need to keep working and get ready for the conference meet."
The Frogs have two weeks to get ready for the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held in Houston, February 25-26.
