Frogs Run Well in Lubbock
Steve Slowly and Michael Frater led a Flyin' Frogs contigent in the 200-meter dash and Monica Twum was impressive in the 55-meter dash, as the TCU Flyin' Frogs competed in the first day of the two-day Red Raider Indoor Classic, held in Lubbock on Friday. No team scores were kept in the competition at the Athletic Training Center on the Texas Tech campus.
Slowly, a senior from Jamiaca, posted the second fastest time in the 200 prelims, crossing the finish line in 21.44 seconds, just ahead of Frater, a sophomore from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who finished in 21.46. They were two of six Horned Frogs to advance at 200 meters. Demario Wesley (21.70), Jermaine Joseph (21.70), Aundre Edwards (22.03) and Cleavon Dillon (22.18) also recorded times fast enough to advance to the next round.
Twum, a junior from Ghana, had the second fastest time in the 55-meter dash prelims, posting an NCAA provisional mark of 6.92. Twum, who placed sixth at 60-meters at the NCAA indoor meet a year ago, was one of four Frog sprinters to advance in the 55-meter dash. Chaunte Baldwin (6.99), La' Toya White (7.00) and Tiffany Starts (7.13) also finished in the top eight during the preliminary heats.
Demario Wesley also posted an NCAA provisional time in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.26, the second fastest time in the prelims. Wesley (6.64) and Michael Frater (6.72) provisionally qualified at 60-meters last week at the Oklahoma Indoor Classic in Norman.
In finals completed on Friday, Kimton Coleman and Aundre Edwards tied for second in the long jump with best marks of 7.15m. Freshman Clevon Dillon tied for seventh with a mark of 6.99m, although he recorded a mark of 7.52m during the prelims.
On the women's side, Justina Malone placed third in the 800-meter finals with a time of 2:19.23. La' Toya White placed fifth (5.54m) and Esther Jackson was eighth (5.29m) in the long jump. The Frogs quintet of Robin Schact (19:01.24), Jamie Ford (19:30.37), Shannon McKinney (19:33.48), Katie Singleton (19:43.71) and Stephanie Wentworth (19:58.10) placed fifth through ninth in the finals of the 5,000-meter run.
