Jan. 18, 2003
The TCU Flyin' Frogs notched six provisional NCAA marks as the indoor track season opened Saturday in Norman at the Oklahoma Indoor Classic. No team scores were held in the competition at the Mosier Indoor Facility on the University of Oklahoma campus.
The Frogs got provisional marks from two-time All-American Michael Frater and Jabari Fields in the 60-meter dash, All-Americans Aundre Edwards and Cleavon Dillon in the long jump, Jerry Harris in the 400 meters and the men's 4x440 yard relay team. At the same meet last season, TCU recorded just two provisional marks.
"This was an excellent opening meet for us," said TCU head coach Monte Stratton. "We did what we were supposed to do and performed very well. This year compared to last year at this meet was like two totally different teams. We were much improved on both the men's and women's sides."
The TCU men took home five first place medals. Frater won the 60 meter dash in 6.69 seconds, edging Fields, who crossed the line in 6.72 seconds. Harris captured the 400 in 47.50 seconds, while Kendall Pyant placed second with a mark of 48.33. Jackson Langat won the 800 meter run in a time of 1:52.22. Brandal Lawrence was the meet's top triple jumper with a best leap of 15.39 meters (50-06.00). The 4x440 yard relay team of Brandon Simpson, Fields, David Spencer and Harris logged a winning time of 3:12.70. The TCU "B" team of Pyant, Nathaniel Garcia, Langat and Jason Morgan was second with a mark of 3:15.36.
On the women's side, TCU's top performance came in the 3000 meter run when the Frog trio of Mary Kinyanjui (10:07.91), Katrina Zielinski (10:18.20) and Alayne Thompson (10:20.36) finished 1-2-3. The Frogs also got second place finishes from freshman Julie Curtis in the 60-meter hurdles (8.83) and Donita Harmon in the 400 (56.01).
The Frogs are back in action again next Saturday when they travel to Houston to take part in the Houston Indoor Classic.
