Harris; Mile Relay Log Provisional NCAA Marks
Jan. 17, 2004
Norman, Oklahoma - The TCU men's mile relay team and quartermiler Jerry Harris notched provisional NCAA marks as the indoor track & field season opened Saturday in Norman at the Oklahoma Indoor Classic. Both TCU squads placed third in the team scoring behind Baylor and Oklahoma and ahead of Texas A&M and SMU in the competition held at the renovated Mosier Indoor Facility on the University of Oklahoma campus.
"All in all it was a good meet for the first meet of the season," said TCU head coach Monte Stratton. "I thought the women had a great meet. It was best meet we've had from top to bottom on the women's side in the nine years I've been at TCU. On the men's side, some key people need to step up and perform for us to be where we want to be."
The TCU quartet of Dwayne Lynes-Bell, Che Chavez, Jackson Langat and Jerry Harris turned in an NCAA provisional time of 3:12.35 to win the mile relay. The NCAA provisional cut off is 3:13.20. Oklahoma was a distant second in the event, finishing more than seven seconds behind the Frogs. TCU's 4x4 indoor relay unit earned a silver medal at the NCAA Championships last March. Harris, who garnered a pair of All-America certificates in 2003 in his first year with the TCU program, ran an open quarter mile of 47.06 to take second place, well ahead of the provisional qualifying cut off mark of 47.65.
Jackson Langat turned in the only other gold medal performance for the TCU men. In addition to running a leg on the relay, the three-time All-American won the mile run in 4:12.24. The Frogs also had silver medal outings from freshman Chaime Breaux in the 60-meter dash and Aundre Edwards in the long jump.
On the women's side, TCU turned in five gold medal performances. Larissa Bakasa had a strong meet, winning the 400 meter dash and running the leadoff leg on TCU's winning mile relay squad. That quartet also included freshmen Marquita Davis and Deborah Jones, along with sophomore Donita Harmon. Other winning performances were turned in by Mary Kinyanjui in the 3000 meters, freshman MaKeatha Cooper in the 60 meter hurdles and freshman Zelma Wade in the shot put. Freshman Calandra Stewart was second in the mile run, while Kandra Lakey earned the silver medal in the shot put.
The Frogs have a short week of preparation before they are back in action on Friday at the Houston Indoor Classic.
