Horned Frogs set for Las Vegas Invite
Dec. 14, 2007
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU men's and women's swimming and diving teams will compete in the three-day Las Vegas Invite held at the Buchanan Natatorium beginning on Saturday. The tournament will mark the first time the Horned Frogs have competed as a team in nearly a month.
The men's squad is coming off an impressive performance, setting three new school records and earning an automatic NCAA qualifying time at the 2007 USA Swimming Short Course National Championships and Long Course Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.
Senior Jonathon Berrettini set new school records in the 100-back and 100-free at the Short Course National Championships. Berrettini's time of 48.28 in the 100-back also ties a Mountain West Conference record set in 2001. At the Long Course Invitational, Berrettini swam to a time of 56.69 in the 100-meter back, automatically qualifying the Lewisville, Texas, native for the 2008 NCAA Men's National Championships in Seattle, Wash.
Fellow senior Scott McCracken also had a stellar showing, becoming the first Frog to break the 20-second mark in the 50-free with a time of 19.99. McCracken also set a new TCU record in the 100-free with a time of 44.77 before Berrettini topped the mark later in the same day.
Last season, both squads earned third-place finishes at the tournament. Alejandro Gomez and R.J. Hesselberg highlighted action for the men, as Gomez placed second in the 1650-free, while Hesselberg took the top spot in the three-meter diving event. On the women's side, Erica Tate posted three top-three finishes, while Cheryl Townsend swam to five top-five finishes.
