MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico - The TCU men's and women's swimming and diving programs had a pair of current Frogs excel at the 2010 Central American & Caribbean Games, which were held in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
TCU junior Edgar Crespo - who swam for the Panama National Team - captured a pair of gold medals in the 50- and 100-meter breaststroke to go along with a silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke.
In the prelims, Crespo posted a time of 28.32 in the 50-meter breaststroke, which ranks 41st in the world this season and set the Panamanian and Championship Records. The TCU swimmer also set the Panamanian and Championship Records in the 100-meter breaststroke after clocking a time of 1:02.07, which ranks 58th in the world.
Crespo recorded a silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:17.48, which was a 4.8 second drop from his pervious best time of 2:22.28. That time also broke the 20-year old Panamanian Record.
Maria Paula Alvarez notched a silver medal in the 800-meter freestyle relay while representing her home country of Colombia.
Former TCU swimmer Alejandro Gomez notched a pair of gold medals in the 800- and 1,500-meter freestyle. Gomez captured his first gold medal of the games following a time of 8:10.53 in the 800-meter freestyle, which was the 58th-best time in the world this season.
The second gold medal for the former TCU standout came in the 1,500-meter freestyle following a time of 15:37.59, which set a Championship Record and ranks 82nd in the world.
The Frogs were also represented at the Central America & Caribbean Games by assistant coach Bill Koppelman, who was serving as the coach of the Panama National Team.
