FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU swimming team will have 19 swimmers compete in the Austin Grad Prix this weekend in an effort to meet the NCAA standards to compete in the NCAA Championships in College Station.
Four TCU record holders will make the trip, including Maria Paula Alvarez, Josh Bagby, Ashley Bolin and Friedrich Grott. Bagby set a new mark for the 100-free last week at the Mountain West Conference Championships, while Grott erased TCU’s benchmark for the 100- and 200-fly that had previously stood since 1992 and 1994, respectively.
Bolin and Alvarez are two of the Frogs’ top freestyle swimmers. Bolin, a freshman from Oshkosh, Wis., is the TCU record holder in the 200- and 500-free, while Alvarez claims the 1000- and 1650-free records. Alvarez has recorded the six-fastest 1000-free times for the Frogs, with the five-best clockings coming this season.
Alvarez, Bagby, Bolin and Grott all garnered All-MWC honors this season for their performances as the MWC Championships. Other All-MWC honorees competing in Austin include sophomores Ellie Bradley and Josh Schifferer, as well as freshmen Laszlo Gyurko and Kaitlyn Vann.
Among some of the competition this weekend will be ten members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Swim Team, as well as Beijing medalists from Zimbabwe, Brazil, France and Trinidad.
