FORT WORTH – TCU men’s swimmer Adam Szilagyi has been named Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday. This is the first conference honor for Szilagyi and the second Men’s Swimmer of the Week in a row for the Horned Frogs as Cooper Robinson earned the most recent honor prior to today's awards.
Szilagyi was one of the stars of TCU’s win at West Virginia last Friday, the first Big 12 dual meet victory for the Horned Frogs. Szilagyi led off for TCU’s winning 200 medley relay team, with his quartet finishing in 1:33.46. The Hungarian came back to lead a TCU 1-2-3 sweep of the 100 back in 49.43. Szilagyi earned his third win of the evening by leading another Horned Frogs 1-2-3 sweep of the 100 fly in 51.32. Szilagyi was also a member of TCU’s 200 free relay team that touched first in 1:24.41, but the Horned Frogs were competing in exhibition.
The Százhalombatta, Hungary native has been a versatile member of TCU’s men’s swimming squad this year. The freshman has earned NCAA ‘B’ cuts in the 100 back and 100 fly and missed the ‘B’ cut in the 200 back by only 0.25 seconds. He ranks second in TCU history in the 100 back, third in the 100 fly and fourth in the 200 back. Szilagyi holds TCU’s fastest time this season in the 100 back and 100 fly, ranks second in the 200 back and 200 free and sits third in the 50 free and 100. He is also a member of TCU’s fastest quartet on all five relays this season.
West Virginia diver Richard Pokorny earned Big 12 Men’s Diver of the Week. On the women’s side, Texas’ Gretchen Jaques won Swimmer of the Week and Maren Taylor of the Longhorns won Diver of the Week.
Szilagyi and the TCU men’s swimming and diving team will compete again Friday at home against Texas, starting at 4:30 p.m.
