FORT WORTH, Texas - For the third time in the season's seven weeks, TCU's diving programs swept the Mountain West Conference Women's and Men's Diver of the Week accolades, the league office announced Wednesday. Senior Kelly Seely claimed the women's honor for the fourth time, while true freshman R.J. Hesselberg was a first-time recipient of the men's award.
Seely won all three of her events last week. In a tri-meet with MWC rival San Diego State and non-conference opponent Loyola Marymount, she claimed first place in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 277.05 and the 3-meter diving event with a total of 299.09. Her 3-meter score was 62 points higher than the next nearest competitor. At Sunday's UC Irvine Diving Invitational, the Friendswood, Texas, product placed first out of 26 divers in the 1-meter with a final score of 276.75.
Hesselberg, who hails from Saskatoon, Canada, picked up his first collegiate victory at the UC Irvine Diving Invitational by placing first on the 3-meter board. He posted a career-best score of 282.00 to defeat six other divers, including senior teammate Kelly McCain (256.45), who took second. Hesselberg's previous best finish was a second-place effort on the platform, his signature event, at the University of Texas Invitational in December.
Courtesy of Seely (4), McCain (2) and Hesselberg (1), TCU has picked up half of the 14 diving awards handed out by the conference during the 2005-06 campaign.
The Horned Frogs' men's and women's teams are in action twice this weekend against league foes. TCU visits BYU on Friday for a 6 p.m. (CST) meet and Utah for a noon (CST) contest Saturday.
