FORT WORTH – TCU went toe-to-toe with 13th-ranked SMU, but fell Wednesday evening, 135-105, inside the TCU University Rec Center Natatorium.
The Horned Frogs were within eight points of the visiting Mustangs at the final break, but SMU was able to finish 1-2-3 in the 200-breaststroke and put the meet out of reach. TCU finished the dual-meet portion of its schedule with an 8-6 record.
On senior night at the URC, it was TCU’s underclassmen that kept the Frogs in the meet against their crosstown rival. Freshman Mackenzie Schuler led a TCU 1-2 charge in the 1000-free when she notched a winning time of 10:30.48. Sophomore Emily-Rose Creighton was second in 10:36.33
In the 400-individual medley, freshman Ali Bleasdell picked up the night’s most-exciting victory. After opening a large lead through the first three strokes, Bleasdell was able to hold off SMU’s Denisa Smolenova in the freestyle for a 4:28.88 finish. Smolenova touched in 4:28.89.
Sophomore Amanda Vincent, the Mountain West leader in the 200-fly, shined in the event once again for TCU. She touched the wall in 2:02.72 to finish more than 1.5 seconds of the second-place finisher for TCU’s other event win on the night.
TCU now turns its sights toward the Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championship in Oklahoma City on Feb. 22-25.
