FORT WORTH – TCU has named rifle member Sarah Scherer and women's track sprinter/long jumper Whitney Gipson its co-Female Scholar-Athletes of the Month and men's golfer Julien Brun for their March performances.
Scherer had a season for the ages, leading TCU to its second rifle national title in three years. The junior from Fort Worth finished third individually in the air rifle portion of the Championships, leading the Horned Frogs to a 2,353-2,350 victory over West Virginia. Her 593-point performance the last day sealed the 13-0 record for TCU on the year. The national title came roughly two weeks after Scherer earned a spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Air Rifle team, and her season's accomplishments were acknowledged in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd.
Gipson, of North Richland Hills, won a national title of her own, taking the women's long jump gold medal after a length of 22-8 feet at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Nampa, Idaho. The mark tied the all-time record set in 2002 and also broke TCU, Mountain West, NCAA Indoor Championships, and Jacksons Track Complex benchmarks. As the first female Horned Frog to ever win a national title and the eighth overall, Gipson also joined three other teammates in winning the 4x100 relay at the Bobby Lane Invitational. The senior was also named MW Indoor Athlete of the Year, South Central Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year, and, like Scherer, featured in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd.
Brun has had in his first year of college, setting new TCU records for victories in a season and a career with his third top-medalist honor of the season at the Insperity ASU Invitational, which led TCU to a fourth-place finish. The 14-under par total of 202 performance against three of the nation's top-10 individuals helped him become the first Horned Frog to win Golfweek's National Golfer of the Week honors. He was also named MW co-Golfer of the Month for February.
