Rough start for Frogs
Sept. 28, 2004
Fort Worth - The Horned Frog rifle team wrapped up its first weekend of matches Sept. 25-26 with the team traveling to Memphis and then Oxford, Miss. The team kicked off the competition season at the Memphis Tiger Open. The team only competed in air rifle at the meet and the team score of 2,179 gave them a fourth-place finish. Sophomore Emily Conway stepped up for the Frogs and shot a team-high air rifle mark of 564. Senior Dana O'Shea finished second in the rank of shooters with a score of 546. Nikki LeCompte and Leah Neubauer rounded out the Frog competitors at this meet. They shot a 545 and 524, respectively. "Emily showed great improvement over last year, but she has to learn to live with a good score and not let that put pressure on her," Coach Karen Monez. The next day, the team traveled to Mississippi for the Ole Miss Open where they placed seventh in air rifle with a team score of 2,157. Conway had the highest mark for the Frogs again with a score of 558. LeCompte and O'Shea finished in 49th and 51st place with scores of 542 and 538, respectively. Neubauer and Suzanne Bush shot a 519 and 513. LeCompte also shot as an individual in the smallbore competition of the match. Her score was 533 to give her a 35th place finish. Monez said LeCompte was the only one to shoot in smallbore because she was the only one ready. The Frogs will be in action again Oct. 2 when they host the annual Horned Frog Invitational on the TCU campus in Fort Worth.
