Rifle Scores Record-Breaking Win Over Kentucky
Jan. 21, 2012
The Frogs' victory snapped Kentucky's 18-match winning streak as they became the only team this season to fire a 4,700 or better on two occasions. The Frogs previously fired a 4,703 at Murray State on Nov. 6.
"Competing against the national champions, the challenge today was to shoot a great score that would continue the win streak," remarked head coach Karen Monez. "I am proud of the team for getting the job done. They just continue to shine!"
Smallbore proved to be the difference in the match as the Frogs used a solid performance to open up a 14-point lead heading into the air rifle portion of the match. TCU fired a 2,341 helped along by a pair of 590's from Sarah Beard and Sarah Scherer. For Beard, it marked a personal best score. Caitlin Morrissey shot a 582 to finish fifth, while Mattie Brogdon fired a 579. Rounding out the Frogs' competitors was Catherine Green, who shot a 576.
Kentucky's rallied to defeat the Frogs in air rifle 2,366-2,362, but it wasn't enough to earn it a match victory. Scherer kept her personal winning streak alive as she fired a 597 to take home first place. She has now been the top finisher in air rifle in all seven matches this season.
Beard fired a season-high 592 to finish fourth and Morrissey was sixth after shooing a 587. Green finished ninth after firing a 586 and Brogdon rounded out the counters for TCU with a 582.
Also shooting for the Frogs in the match were Jaime Dowd, Claudia Duksa, Nicole Makrakis and Maggie Savage. Dowd matched her career-high with a 584 in air rifle, while Duksa set a career-high with a 586. She also fired a 568 in smallbore.
The victory moves TCU to 7-0 on the season. Another big test awaits TCU in its next match next weekend when it hosts perennial powerhouse West Virginia. The match is set for Saturday morning at the TCU Rifle Range.
