GREETINGS FROM THE BIG APPLE
We hope everyone is staying warm and safe amidst the recent ice storm to hit our area. I’m currently in New York City for Big 12 athletics directors meetings and the National Football Foundation’s College Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony.
DONNING THE CAP AND GOWN
It’s a quiet week on the athletics front as our student-athletes focus on final exams. We have 31 student-athletes who will graduate on Saturday.
FROG CLUB GIVING
Please keep the Frog Club in mind if you need to make a charitable contribution for tax purposes or if you need to renew your Frog Club membership before Dec. 31. As you know, the Frog Club raises funds to support student-athlete scholarships which are critical to the overall performance of our athletics programs. Every dollar contributed to the Frog Club makes a significant impact in the lives of our student-athletes. Please call the Frog Club office at (817) 257-7700 or you can make a gift online at the following link: http://gofrogs.cstv.com/frog-club/.
Congratulations to Jason Verrett on being named the Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year! It’s a great honor for an incredible young man who will officially become a TCU graduate on Saturday. Sam Carter, Chucky Hunter, B.J. Catalon, Jaden Oberkrom and Kevin White also received All-Big 12 recognition from the conference’s head coaches. Volleyball’s Yvonne Igodan and Stephanie Holland were named American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Southwest Region Honorable Mention.
As a reminder, we're offering $5 general admission tickets for all 11 men's and women's home basketball games over the holiday break from Dec. 15 to Jan. 8.
ON THE DOCKET
With the close of final exams Friday, we’ll get back to athletics competition on Saturday when our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program travels to Jenks, Okla., for a meet versus Missouri State. We’ll then have a home hoops doubleheader against UTPA on Sunday. Our men will face the Broncs at 1 p.m. with the women taking the court at 4 p.m.
BIG 12 CORNER
The Big 12 is No. 1 in the nation for men’s basketball in this week’s Ratings Percentage Index with six teams ranked in the top 40. Also, the Big 12 is the only Division I conference with every team at .625 or higher in winning percentage.
MEET THE STAFF
Brent Cunningham is in his first year as our NCAA compliance coordinator. In addition to managing all aspects of financial aid for us, Brent oversees our camps and clinics, awards and benefits, outside competition, practice logs and NLIs. The New Orleans native joined us in July after working last year as a graduate assistant in the compliance office at Marshall, where he earned a master’s degree in sport administration. For a brief period, he was running the office in Huntington. Brent is a graduate of LSU. During his time in Baton Rouge, he worked in development for the Tiger Athletic Foundation while also interning in the compliance office. He received his undergraduate degree in sport administration.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Cody and Karen Jenschke met as student athletic trainers for us and got married in Summer 2007. Cody served our football, men's basketball and men's tennis programs, while Karen worked with men's and women's track and field, women's basketball and football. Cody has been a high school athletics trainer for nine years and is currently the head athletics trainer at Flower Mound High School. Karen is a health science instructor for Lewisville ISD. She was an athletics trainer at Plano East High School for six years until welcoming daughter Landry to the family. Cody, Karen and Landry bleed purple and continue to support the Horned Frogs!
SPANNING THE GLOBE
In this week’s edition of the TCU Nation flashing the Horned Frogs hand sign or wearing TCU apparel from all points worldwide, we have a photo of the TCU Rugby Club at the recent Serevi Skills Camp in Dallas. The TCU students/rugby players in the picture are Bobby Stacks, Ricky Flores, Austin Buch, Justin Cox, Danny Garcia and Chris Meyers. Also included in the photo is head coach TeShay Flowers. Please continue to send me (firstname.lastname@example.org) images to share.
NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week's Answer: Ben Stiller, as White Goodman in Dodgeball, made the declarative statement, "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...nobody!"
This Week's Quote: "I can't believe you're a professional golfer. I think you should be working at the snack bar."
An assistant men's basketball coach at Ocean State University (OSU) will be staying at his brother's house for Christmas. One of OSU's NLI signees lives in the same town as the coach's brother. Is it permissible for the coach to go see the signee at the signee's house on Christmas Eve to say hello and happy holidays? Please note: Men's basketball is in a dead period from Dec. 24-26.
Yes. NCAA Bylaw 13.02.5.2.2 states that a prospective student-athlete is no longer subject to the application of a dead period after one of the following events occurs (Adopted: 1/16/10 effective 8/1/10, Revised: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11, 1/19/13 effective 8/1/13, 11/25/13):
(a.) The prospective student-athlete signs a National Letter of Intent (NLI) or the institution's written offer of admission and/or financial aid; or
(b.) The institution receives a financial deposit in response to the institution's offer of admission.
