FORT WORTH – Jason Verrett and Blaire Pickens have been named TCU’s Athletes of the Week for helping their teams earn victories over the past week.
Verrett, a cornerback on the Horned Frogs football team, was a key component of the TCU defense that shut down No. 18 Texas on Thanksgiving night in Austin. Verrett was second on the Frogs with seven tackles, posted an interception to end Texas’ opening drive of the game and recorded a pass breakup in TCU’s 20-13 victory. The junior has been one of the nation’s top cover corners, ranking in the top five nationally in interceptions (six) and passes defended (19).
Pickens, a freshman right side from Anaheim Hills, Calif., finished the season with a couple of the best performances of her young career. In TCU’s midweek match at Oklahoma, Pickens posted a career-high 10 kills and led the team with a .409 hitting percentage on the evening. She was one of the stars of the Frogs’ season-finale victory over West Virginia Saturday, recording seven kills on only 11 attempts with a hitting percentage of .636. Pickens averaged 2.57 points per set on the week.
Verrett and the Horned Frogs football squad wrap up the regular season at home Saturday against No. 11 Oklahoma. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
