FORT WORTH – Jason Verrett and Morgan Lane were named TCU’s Athletes of the Week as the duo led the Horned Frogs to historic victories.
Verrett, a junior cornerback, was one of TCU’s many defensive stars in the 39-38 double-overtime victory at West Virginia. Verrett helped shut down the high-power passing offense of the Mountaineers, restricting WVU to 338 yards total offense. The Fairfield, Calif. native posted four tackles, one for loss, a pass breakup and grabbed only the third interception thrown by West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. Verrett’s biggest play came at the end of the first overtime when he blocked a potential 36-yard field goal to keep the game alive.
Lane, a sophomore from Frisco, was one of the many key players in the TCU women’s soccer programs magical run from a No. 8 seed to the Big 12 Championship game. The defender helped the Horned Frogs post shutouts against No. 14 and Big 12 regular season champion West Virginia and Texas. Lane also earned recognition in the classroom last week, earning Academic All-Big 12 First-Team honors.
Verrett and the Horned Frogs football team take on No. 2 Kansas State Saturday at 6 p.m. on FOX.
