May 21, 2008 James Sacheck and Joe Brown were selected as the Co-Male Athletes of the Week while Virgil Hodge was cited as the Female Athlete of the Week and Tyler Lockwood garnered Gulliver's Travel Road Warrior of the Week honors - which were announced on Wednesday (May 21).
Sacheck will make his first-ever NCAA National Championship appearance as the TCU junior defeated Charles Ford of Tennessee to earn the final individual sport at the 2008 NCAA Division I Central Regional Championships this past weekend at The Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. A native of Zionsville, Ind. - Sacheck concluded an outstanding tournament as he tied for ninth overall with a three-round score of 220 (74-76-70) - including tying a season-best 70 in the final round of action. Sacheck - who recorded the best score of the tournament in the final round - defeated Ford in a two-hole playoff to secure his first trip to the NCAA National Championships. In the men's javelin - Brown closed his Mountain West Conference career in winning fashion as the TCU senior notched the gold medal on his final attempt of competition. Overall - Brown blasted a throw of 221-7 to become only the second Horned Frog ever to win a conference crown in the javelin and the first since Wes Ritchey won the Southwest Conference title in 1954. Brown's season-best and regional-qualifying toss currently ranks as the 21st-best throw in the NCAA this spring. Hodge closed out her Mountain West Conference career in outstanding style as well as the TCU senior clocked a new personal-best time of 11.21 in the 100-meter dash to claim her third-straight conference outdoor title. Hodge - who also set a new St. Kitts national record - broke the meet and complex record in the event and her mark is currently the seventh-fastest time in the nation and ranks in the top-25 in the world standings. Lockwood improved his overall record to 6-1 on the mound for the Frogs as the TCU hurler tossed 8.0 innings - allowing two runs (both earned) while surrendering six hits and striking out two hitters in the Purple and White's 8-3 victory over the University of New Mexico. With the victory - the Frogs recorded their 10th consecutive victory and clinched the regular-season Mountain West Conference title. |
