FORT WORTH, Texas - Six TCU student-athletes have been honored as 2007 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars, the school's athletics department has announced. The award is sponsored by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education and was established to honor student-athletes of color who have excelled both academically and athletically.
TCU's winners included: Ashley Davis (women's basketball), Neil P. Dougherty (men's basketball), Jamee Jones (women's track), Gabby Lopez (women's tennis), Andrea Morgado (women's tennis) and Kenny Ruelas (football). All of the Horned Frog honorees were seniors during the 2006-07 school year.
To be included, student-athletes have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
The award was inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism.
