Fort Worth, Texas - The TCU Sports Review recaps all of the events for the Frogs this past week and take a look at the upcoming action for the Purple and White.
Men's Basketball
Last Week: TCU men's basketball fell to Wyoming on February 13th by a score of 72-54 in Laramie, Wyo. Despite the scoring efforts of Jason Ebie (Houston, Texas/Alief Elsik H.S.), Henry Salter (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport H.S.) and Kevin Langford (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) - who each put up 10 points - the Cowboys were too much for the Horned Frogs to handle.
On Saturday, the Frogs finished the week by dropping a 64-48 decision against the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M., which dropped their record to 12-12 overall and 4-7 in conference play. The high scorer for the Frogs was Salter, who put up 13 points, while senior Brent Hackett (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest H.S.) added nine points.
This week: The Frogs will be home at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum this week where they face the Rams of Colorado State for a 6:30 p.m. Central Time.
Women's Basketball
Last Week: The TCU women's basketball team had a successful week at home with wins over Wyoming and New Mexico. The Lady Frogs first faced 22nd-ranked Wyoming on Wednesday where they captured a 73-59 victory giving them their fifth straight win.
Adrianne Ross (Hobbs N.M./Hobbs H.S.) led the Purple and White with 21 points and Helen Roden (Melbourne, Australia/Odessa College) added 15 points and made all three of her three-point attempts in the first half.
The Lady Frogs finished their week with an exciting overtime win over the Lobos of New Mexico on Sunday afternoon. In the 59-51 victory over UNM, Helena Sverrisdottir (Flensborgarskolinn, Iceland) set a career-high with 24 points after shooting 10-of-15 from the field and was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for a second straight time. The sixth consecutive victory improved TCU to 16-9 overall and 9-2 in conference play.
This week: TCU looks for their seventh straight win on the road where they face Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. Central Time on Wednesday night.
Men's Tennis
Last Week: The TCU men's tennis program started the week off right on Monday after solidly beating Dallas Baptist, 7-0, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 5-2.
It was a battle of the unbeatens on Sunday as TCU upset 31st-ranked Texas Tech with a score of 4-3. Doubles partners Zach Nichols (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis H.S.) and Jack Seider (Austin, Texas/Lighthouse Christian Academy) cruised at the number-three position as they defeated Lenoir Ramos and Ilya Babincuic.
In singles' play, junior Kriegler Brink (Gauteng, South Africa) was the difference for the Frogs as he came back from down 4-1 winning five consecutive games to claim the victory. The three wins improved the undefeated Frogs to 8-0 overall.
This week: TCU returns to the courts on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. where they host 57th-ranked Minnesota.
Women's Tennis
Last Week: The 36th-ranked TCU women's tennis team defeated North Texas, 6-1, on Wednesday where they swept through the doubles' matches. Anna Sydorska (Lviv, Ukraine) won both singles' and doubles' matches posting an 8-3 win with partner Idunn Hertzberg (Oslo, Norway/Wang H.S.).
TCU defeated 28th-ranked Texas A&M by a score of 4-3 on Saturday to improve to 2-1 overall. A strong performance by Hertzberg gave TCU the victory as she won singles' play with straight sets of 6-2, 6-2.
This Week: Play begins at 5 p.m. on Wednesday as the Frogs head to Waco to face Baylor.
Track and Field
Last Week: TCU headed to Arkansas for the Tyson Invitational this past week where they faced fierce competition as the tournament features 15 of the top-25 programs in the country. Neidra Covington (St. Petersburg, Fla./Boca Ciega H.S.) finished first in the women's long jump with her personal-best 6.13 meters (20-01.50).
The second day of action brought two new school records in the triple jump set by Jonathan Jackson (Grand Prairie, Texas/South Grand Prairie H.S.) and Covington. Virgil Hodge (St. Kitts, Caribbean/Washington Irving H.S.) placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 23.33, which is currently sixth-fastest in the nation. Freshman Sean Zurko (Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado H.S.) finished second overall in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.05.
This week: The Frogs will be out of action this week as they will be preparing for the Mountain West Indoor Conference Championships with competition starting on February 28th at the USAF Academy in Colorado.
Equestrian
Last Week: After a three-month break, the TCU Equestrian team opened spring action on Friday with a 7-5 win over Tennessee-Martin advancing them to face Fresno State in the finals.
Caitlin Sewell (Benbrook, Texas/All Saints Episcopal H.S.) earned Most Valuable Performer honors in Equitation on the Flat with a score of 69. Kindel Huffman (Norco, Calif./Norco H.S.) competed in all four events and earned her sixth MVP honor of the season and first in the Reining as she finished with a score of 75.5.
The Frogs fell 7-4 to Fresno State in the championship on Saturday. Even though TCU lost, Carrie von Uhlit (Winters, Calif./Dixon H.S.) gave a phenomenal effort to secure a 76.5-75.5 Western victory. With that victory, TCU has improved to 9-0 in Western and is now the only undefeated team in the nation.
This week: Competition starts on Friday as TCU will get a chance to redeem themselves against Fresno State in Mansfield, Texas.
Women's Golf
Last Week: The TCU women's golf team finished 11th at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge this past week in Palos Verdes, Calif. The 28th-ranked Horned Frogs shot a final round of 25-over-par 309, one stroke better than Tuesday's second round to finish with a 54-hole score of 925. Valentine Derrey (Paris, France) finished ninth individually with a final-round 76 for TCU's low score on the day.
This week: The Frogs return to action February 24th at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan.
Rifle
Last week: The TCU rifle team posted its fifth straight victory over UTEP this past weekend in El Paso. As a team, the Frogs recorded the win with an aggregate score of 4,640.
Erin Lorenzen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran H.S.) won the air rifle event with a strong score of 591, and Lauren Sullivan (Grosse Point Park, Mich./Grosse Point South H.S.) placed second with a shot of 587.
The Frogs edged past Nevada with a score of 4,627 to post a sixth consecutive victory on the season. Lorenzen fired a 586 to place second in air rifle and also received individual honors after finishing the match in first place with an aggregate score of 1,162. Emily Paper (Pleasant Valley, Iowa/Pleasant Valley H.S.) placed second with a score of 1,159.
This Week: The Rifle team will be out of action until March 14th when they will compete in the NCAA Rifle Championships located in Fort Worth.
