TCU Sports Review - January 29, 2008
Jan. 29, 2008 Fort Worth, Texas - The TCU Sports Review will recap all of the events for the Frogs this past week and take a look at upcoming action for the Purple and White.
Men's Basketball
Kevin Langford (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) also added 14 points for the Horned Frogs and increased his season total to 16 consecutive double-digit scoring performances. This Week: The Frogs will return to the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on Wednesday to square-off against UNLV - who stands in first place in the Mountain West Conference. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening. The Frogs will also take to the hardwood against the Air Force Academy on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
Women's Basketball
This Week: The Lady Frogs hit the road this week as they travel to Las Vegas for a match-up against UNLV on Tuesday for a 9:00 p.m. Central Time start. Following its' game against the Lady Rebels, TCU will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., for a conference contest against the Air Force Academy on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. tip.
Track and Field
JimAnne Hejny (Cisco, Texas/Cisco H.S.) notched a first-place showing in the women's long jump while Che' Chavez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep H.S.) captured the gold medal in the men's 400-meter dash after crossing the line at the 47.46 mark. This Week: The Flyin' Frogs will begin the Month of February at the Kentucky Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky for a two-day meet this weekend.
Swimming and Diving
Cameron Allred (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest H.S.) claimed top honors in the 150-meter backstroke with a time of 1:31.68 while Ben Biefnes (Aurora, Colo./Grandview H.S.) won his third consecutive meet in the 400-meter individual medley after clocking in with a time of 4:05.31 for the Frogs. R.J. Hesselberg (Saskatoon, Canada/St. Joseph) captured the gold medal in his 11th event of the season as he won the three-meter dive with a score of 345.22, and newcomer Trevor Woods (Omaha, Neb./Westside H.S.) notched a first-place showing in the 1,650-meter freestyle with a time of 16:22.28 - seven seconds faster than the second-place finisher. The Lady Frogs were led by Maria Alvarez (Cali, Colombia/Berchmans H.S.) captured a pair of gold medals this past weekend against the Lobos as she won the 200-meter and 500-meter freestrokes with times of 1:55.00 and 5:06.01, respectively. Samantha Smith (Alpharetta, Ga./Centennial H.S.), Ellie Bradley (Tigard, Ore./Cy-Fair H.S.), Natalie Melenric (Alvin, Texas/Alvin H.S.) and Nikki Pappas (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast H.S.) led the 200-meter medley relay squad with a time of 1:49.69, which was good enough for the gold medal. This Week: The TCU women's swimming and diving program is out action this week, but will return to the tank on Wednesday (Feb. 6) against North Texas. The men's swimming and diving program will return to the pool at the Mountain West Conference Championships held in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Rifle
Simone Riford (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Punahou School) claimed an individual first-place gold medal with an aggregate score of 1,166 after notching a top showing in the air rifle with a score of 590. The TCU sophomore also notched a fourth-place finish in the smallbore with a score of 576. Emily Paper (Pleasant Valley, Iowa/Pleasant Valley H.S.) finished second overall with a total score of 1,164 after notching marks of 577 in the smallbore and 587 in the air rifle, which placed in her second and third overall in her respective events. This Week: The Frogs return home this week on Saturday (Feb. 2) when they welcome the Air Force Academy to the Fort Worth area. TCU Athletic Media Relations
