Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center - Bernard J. "Tut" Bartzen Varsity Courts
"Tut" Bartzen "Tut" was named head coach for both the TCU men's and women's varsity programs in 1974 after a 12-year career with Colonial Country Club. The native of San Angelo, Texas, played collegiate tennis at William and Mary College where he recorded 50 consecutive single wins. Bartzen also was a member of two NCAA championship teams and won the NCAA Doubles Championship. He was ranked in the USTA's top 10 for nine straight years and was twice ranked # 2. Bartzen won the USTA Clay Court Championships four times in single, twice in doubles and also claimed the Canadian Championships and the Tri State/Western Championships. He was a co-captain of the U.S. Davis Cup Team and won 15 matches while representing the country. Bartzen retired as coach and director of the Tennis Center in 1998 and was presented with the Rolex Meritorious Service Award from the ITA. TCU honored Coach Bartzen for his long years of service and excellence by naming the Varsity Courts in his honor in December of 1995.
